At K's checkup in October, she passed with flying colors, except the doc told me that she had failed her vision test for the second year in a row. "Huh?" I said, "I wasn't told she failed last year, this is a surprise". The doc said that they were hoping her vision would improve over the year, but that since she had failed a second time, we should take her to a pediatric hospital's ophthalmology department to see why.
It took us a few weeks to get to an appointment, but the day arrived and K did beautifully. She followed their directions, didn't complain about having her eyes dilated, and tried her very best. (She also did one of the eye tests naming the letters rather than shapes !!!) At the end, the doc told me that glasses would change K's life, that she has probably never seen 20/20 and that she has amblyopia (lazy eye) with farsightedness. We were shocked! We've never seen K's eye cross and she reads letters and points out things she sees all the time. Andy & I have joked, however, that K is good at so many things, finding lost items isn't one of them. We could send her to find her shoes, and they could be the only pair by the door, and she would come back without them. Now it all made sense, she has a problem focusing her eyes. Glasses would be the first step to correct this issue, and she needs to have her eyes checked every three months for the next couple of years to see how her eyes are strengthening. This does run in families, and so far T is checking out ok. The doc will watch him carefully too.
I've written about K's love of accessories before, so this transition really hasn't been a big deal to her. She loved choosing her glasses, and wears them without complaint. We've ordered a back up pair for her in case something happens to these ones but, so far so good! I snapped some pictures of the day we picked up her glasses to capture the moment.
